At Historisch Hout BV, we offer sustainable, kiln-dried oak boards that feature small pinholes — traces of natural insect activity from when the wood was still living. In many standard wood gradings, this type of oak is rejected for aesthetic reasons.

The “Antik” oak boards are made from a rustic grade of kiln-dried oak. These boards display small holes (pinholes) caused by the oak pinhole borer a beetle that lives in the sapwood of living oak trees. Infected trees must therefore be removed from healthy forests to protect unaffected trees from infestation.
Although the small holes may make the wood less visually appealing for certain applications, they do not affect the structural integrity of the oak. In many standard wood gradings, this type of wood is rejected but we consciously choose to give it a second life. This aligns with the sustainable nature of our company.
By offering these boards as planed or finely sawn products in two different thicknesses and various fixed lengths, these dried oak boards are suitable for both private and professional customers. In doing so, we provide a beautiful piece of oak that is both functional and attractively priced.
The number of pinholes varies per board and per side. Some boards have just a few small holes, while others have more each piece is unique.
The oak pinhole borer can only survive in living trees. Once the tree is felled, the beetle dies naturally. In addition, the drying process ensures that any remaining insects are completely eliminated. This means the wood is 100% insect-free and therefore perfectly suited for interior applications.
